Building control communication protocols

DALI, M-Bus, BACnet, MSTP, Modbus, SMI, TCP/IP… the list of communications protocols used in buildings seems endless and often confusing. Whilst many of these are “single function” – e.g., for lighting or shading control – and sometimes proprietary, many others have become de-facto standards and widely adopted within the industry. This CPD module will demystify the fieldbus and network minefield and discuss the ever-increasing popularity of converging building control networks with IT infrastructure.

Converged building controls (BS EN15232)

Where BS EN15217 defines the methods for expressing energy performance of buildings, BS EN15232 defines the effect of building automation control systems (BACS) that help create energy-efficient living and working spaces. Only through converging all aspects of room control, such as heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting, into a single platform, can the highest levels of energy saving be realised, helping to achieve the best performance class.
