BCIA member to shine spotlight on major industry challenge

Is technology replacing the building services maintenance engineer? That’s the question being posed by BCIA Management Committee Member Lewis Locke in a presentation at this year’s Build2Perform Live.

The Director of AndOr Systems will co-present the much-anticipated debate, alongside James Campbell from Troup Bywaters + Anders, at CIBSE’s Build2Perform Live exhibition on Thursday 14th November. The hour-long discussion will begin at 2.30pm in the Maintain2Perform Theatre.

One of the main talking points of the presentation will be whether technology is the silver bullet to achieving higher performing buildings in operation, and if so, what that means for the building services engineer.

That will lead on to the question of whether the industry is focusing too much on technology to solve all the sector’s problems and forgetting the importance of the building services engineer.

With the construction industry facing a major skills shortage, losing real, hands-on, engineering skills as the focus moves more to data-led maintenance could provide the built environment with a real challenge. As a result, the presentation will promote discussion around how the relationship between technology, controls, and maintenance can be reimagined to achieve, and maintain, building performance.

The presentation is part of the two-day Build2Perform Live exhibition, taking place at London ExCeL on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th November. As the ninth edition of the event, it promises to be one of the biggest and best yet.

With over 70 hours of CPD-accredited content, 125 expert speakers, and more than 100 exhibitors, attendees will be able to experience a dynamic and diverse program, while meeting other forward-thinking industry professionals and sector leaders.

In addition to Lewis Locke’s presentation, those in attendance can look forward to sessions covering everything from embodied carbon and decarbonising heat, through to climate resilience in the built environment, health, wellbeing, comfort, and safety, domestic retrofitting approaches towards net zero, sustainable cooling, and equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI).

If you’re interested in attending the exhibition, visit the Build2Perform website to register your place.
