BEMS Controls Apprentices: Kickstarting my career in BEMS
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re highlighting the experiences of apprentices in the building controls industry. Apprenticeships offer a valuable pathway into a dynamic and evolving sector, providing hands-on experience alongside structured learning.
In this piece, Joel Smith a Level 4 BCIA Apprentice at Schneider Electric shares his journey — how he discovered the industry, the skills he has developed, and why an apprenticeship has been the perfect way to kickstart his career.
I chose the Level 4 BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship because I wanted a new challenge. After studying Electrical Installations in college, I wasn’t sure if it was the right path for me. When a relative introduced me to BMS, I was immediately interested. It related to my previous studies while also opening up a world of new opportunities.
A typical day varies depending on whether it’s a study week or an on-site day. On-site days start early, ensuring I’m ready to begin work by 8 AM. At this stage, I primarily shadow and learn from the experienced engineers I am working with, occasionally assisting with tasks.
Over time, I’ve been able to apply my growing knowledge by taking on small individual tasks, which has significantly boosted my confidence and helped me progress in the early stages of my apprenticeship.
Study days focus on the theory behind what I learn on-site, reinforcing key concepts of BMS and HVAC. This balance between hands-on experience and classroom learning has been invaluable.
Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve gained not only technical skills but also important life skills—time management, communication, travelling and many more. My technical understanding of BMS improves daily as I encounter new challenges and areas within the industry. As I continue taking on more individual responsibilities and attending training courses, my knowledge and confidence will strengthen.
Choosing an apprenticeship has been the best decision for my career so far. I’ve had the opportunity to meet incredible people, both within my team and beyond. It has helped me develop a greater level of maturity while opening doors to new opportunities and challenges.
For anyone in the position I was in 12 months ago—unsure of what career path to take—I highly recommend an apprenticeship. It allows you to explore different industries, discover what you truly enjoy, and gain valuable experience to kickstart your career.
