Thriving on the creation of a better future for all

In celebration of International Women in Engineering Day, we’re focusing on those working in the BEMS industry and hear from Niranjhani Mummidi Krishnamurthy, Training and Tech Support Manager of Johnson Controls BE UK Ltd.

The number of female professionals in senior positions in the building controls industry is on the increase. While it’s encouraging to see so many talented women thriving in engineering and BEMS careers, there is much more the industry can do to attract even more.

Keen to shine a spotlight on the many dedicated and highly skilled women working in the building controls sector, the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) spoke to Niranjhani Mummidi Krishnamurthy, Training and Tech Support Manager of Johnson Controls BE UK Ltd, about her time in BEMS.

Having worked in the industry for six years, Niranjhani is thriving on delving deeper into the sector and furthering her knowledge of building automation.

She said: “I have been working in the building controls industry for the past six years, and it has been a journey filled with passion and personal growth. Starting as an Automation and Instrumentation consultant, my career took a turn with a project for a large data centre which ignited my passion for building automation, prompting me to dive deeper into this fascinating sector.

“Soon I transitioned to field-based roles from consultancy to gain practical, hands-on experience. However, I faced significant challenges in these roles as many doubted my ability to do physically demanding jobs. I embraced these challenges wholeheartedly, consistently delivering high-quality work that earned me recognition in the industry.

The industry’s undergone significant changes

She continues: “Since I started, the building controls industry has transformed remarkably, with advancements in smart technologies and a stronger emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. What I love most about my work is seeing the direct impact on building performance and sustainability, knowing that my efforts contribute to creating greener environments and improved comfort in buildings.

“For women, the building controls industry offers a uniquely rewarding career path where every day presents opportunities to innovate and make a meaningful impact. To inspire more women to join our ranks, we must advocate for balanced gender representation in technical roles, cultivate robust partnerships with educational institutions, and ignite enthusiasm through outreach programs that showcase the exciting possibilities in our field.

“Celebrating the achievements of women leaders and implementing supportive policies such as enhanced maternity leave and tailored leadership development for women are crucial steps towards empowering the next generation of leaders.

The future is bright

Niranjhani is encouraged by developments in the sector and looks forward to a promising future for anyone working in BEMS and engineering careers.

She said: “Looking ahead, I envision a future where the building controls industry continues to lead in smart technologies, cybersecurity, and sustainability. I see a landscape where diversity and educational collaborations thrive, driving even greater innovation and impact.

“My hopes for the future include faster adoption of change in technology, increased hiring of young field engineers, and greater awareness among young talent about the opportunities in building controls. Together, by advocating for the role of women in our industry, we can build a vibrant and inclusive community that propels us towards a brighter future for all.”

Niranjhani’s passion for the industry and furthering her knowledge of building automation highlights the talent looking for a career in this rewarding sector. However, it’s important that more professionals, both male and female, are encouraged to work in BEMS and engineering. To do this, the industry must provide more education and encouragement, and offer increased opportunities.
