Award winners in focus: Building Controls and BEMS Installer of the Year

Our next BCIA award winner under the spotlight is Detail Design Engineering Limited (DDE), winner of Building Controls and BEMS Installer of the Year.

DDE has been delivering BMS services since 1991. The company prides itself on trying to help clients look beyond the construction phase and to understand their vision of how the building will be used and operated going forward.

For its awards entry, the company showcased its recent work for Eurocaps, where the design brief was to deliver a system to provide the correct environment for the manufacture of capsules, requiring extremely low dew point levels for the drying and storage of product.

Andrew Powell, Operations Director, explained: “Understanding what the maintenance of these conditions means to the customer in the context of compliance and the commercial implications was critical to our solution and ongoing service. Consequently, we delivered a scheme that helped the client meet his obligations by correctly recording and monitoring the conditions, providing timely alerts to the engineering team on condition deviation and providing a platform that links to the day-to-day procedures that the customer employs across site.”

Soft transition

The delivery of the project had many stand-out features. The size and technical complexity were significant and the integration with existing systems of various ages was important. The client was looking to integrate all aspects of their plant and services and help create a system that met their commercial and compliance requirements. With a backdrop of the energy crisis, providing a robust, efficient, modern and cost effective solution was not just desirable but critical. Working with the client from the off, DDE met the challenging requirements during the construction phase, but it is the continued partnership with the client that is special. After initial system delivery, DDE moved seamlessly into the service and maintenance phase with a soft transition.

Tony Farrup, Head of Engineering at Eurocaps, praised DDE for its concise and professional approach to the project, and explained why the two companies will benefit from an ongoing partnership. He said: “The project came in on time and within budget. We were so impressed with DDE’s knowledge and service level that we have continued our relationship. DDE provide us with ongoing support with a comprehensive service level agreement which includes world class, out of hours and remote technical support. We have also partnered with DDE on several continuous improvement and sustainability projects adding ancillary plant to our BMS and reducing energy costs monitoring and modifying control strategies. It is our intention to continue this partnership as we continue to grow.”

On DDE being announced as the winner at the BCIA Awards, Andrew Powell concluded: “It’s great for the DDE team to be recognised for the excellent work we are seeing delivered for our customers on a daily basis. This year we faced some stiff competition, so to come out on top was extremely special.”
