Beginning the journey
Greg Smith, newly elected Chair of the BCIA’s Young Engineers Network, discusses his first few weeks in the role and looks ahead to the first meeting on 18th April 2023.
Welcome to the fresh start to the BCIA Young Engineers Network. It’s a great time to be part of the network as we begin the journey of where we want to take this social assembly.
I’ve had a fantastic last 24 hours since writing this, where I have been lucky enough to meet and discuss the network and the industry with some young engineers who themselves were not currently aware or members. They were incredibly keen to sign up and assist in our plans, and had some exciting stories. They showed passion and interest which we could all look to gain from and, likewise, I would imagine everyone reading this would have the same spark they too could pass on to others.
Different moving parts
We are all experts in our industry – but what I particularly like is that everyone is a different moving part within the BMS engine. We are all working at different levels with differing viewpoints on different sections. This is where I hope the network can assist in helping link all these differing pieces of knowledge together.
We are holding our first meeting to look at priorities and the format/outcomes of meetings and events for the next 12 months or so.
The meeting will take place online (Teams) to ensure it’s accessible for all and will take place as follows:
18th April, 10am – 11.30am

It would be great if you could make it along as it’ll be a lot more of a general open forum for all those within the network.
Building the network
It will be our first chance since its creation to agree how we build the network, for the network. We have some exciting proposals to share and will be discussing these with you. There will be some thoughts, and we’ll be looking to gauge interest in creating some workgroups within the network to show off skills, aid training and improve knowledge not only for ourselves, but also the buildings and infrastructure we work within. This can then all be used to look forward to our future as engineers as we form what I am hopeful will be a solid foundation for the future of the network.
As a group we will be looking for as much input as we can, and will really looking to bounce off ideas where we can; so the more the merrier when it comes to this. An ideal would be to have engineers from all areas, and pathways into the industry. Let’s try to get a really good mix of people, which will help to shine a spotlight on areas we aim to improve and, where we can, engineer some solutions.
