YEN Chair: BCIA YEN Events - Engineering a brighter future for the sector

With the building controls and automation sector facing a skills shortage and the UK’s 2050 net zero target rapidly approaching, empowering the next generation of industry professionals to thrive is more critical than ever. The Building Controls Industry Association’s (BCIA) Young Engineers Network (YEN) offers the ideal solution – furthering the knowledge of those participating while helping employers drive innovation and ensure a more sustainable future for the built environment.

Launched in 2022, the BCIA’s YEN offers young engineers crucial support in developing and enhancing their skills, giving them a space to network, collaborate and grow alongside like-minded professionals. Participants gain access to tailored events that enhance their expertise and equip them with the latest industry insights—helping them to become more effective, creative, and forward-thinking in their roles.

But the benefits of the YEN don’t stop there. The advantages extend to employers too. By encouraging young engineers to attend YEN events, companies foster a culture of continuous learning, allowing their teams to stay ahead of industry trends, adopt emerging technologies, and implement best practices. The result is a more innovative and engaged workforce, better positioned to contribute to the company’s success and growth.

Knowledge-sharing opportunities

Held across the UK, the YEN events bring together young professionals at similar career stages, offering them the chance to share experiences, collaborate on ideas, and learn from each other’s challenges and successes. This exchange of knowledge and insights is invaluable, as engineers return to their workplaces with fresh perspectives and new approaches they can apply in their work - contributing to innovation within their company.

With the building controls and automation industry rapidly evolving, it’s essential for young engineers to stay informed and the YEN events are tailored to keep them up to speed – all for the benefit of their employers, too.

The young engineers are given direct access to experienced professionals and industry leaders, offering invaluable insights into the career pathways available to them, leadership development, and broader industry trends. This will give them the confidence to share their knowledge with colleagues, and a better understanding of what is needed to shape the industry’s future through strong leadership.

Boosting engagement and standing in the industry

Investing in the development of young engineers not only helps them grow professionally, but it also sends a powerful message to the workforce that their growth matters. This investment can lead to increased morale, stronger engagement, and greater long-term loyalty to the company. For employers, the ongoing investment in the next generation also enhances their standing in the industry, showcasing their commitment to nurturing talent and driving the future of the sector.

Exciting Upcoming Events

The YEN community will continue to grow with a packed calendar of events designed to foster both personal and professional development. One such event is a visit to the Distech Training Academy on Thursday 27th March 2025, focusing on sustainability and the crucial role building management systems and automation play in the UK’s journey to net zero. Attendees will participate in a CPD session and engage in a Climate Fresk workshop, gaining practical knowledge and insights they can apply in their roles.

With regular events across the UK, young engineers will be given access to free training, workshops, team-building exercises, and valuable networking opportunities. These events are essential for developing skills, fostering relationships, and staying connected with others in the industry.

A Bright Future for Young Engineers and Employers Alike

YEN membership offers exceptional value for both young engineers and their employers. By participating in the YEN events and initiatives, engineers benefit from ongoing professional development, access to cutting-edge industry knowledge, and the opportunity to shape the future of the building controls and automation sector. They can help drive innovation and support the transition to a greener, more energy-efficient built environment.
